Zoidberg Intestine, sold for $1.75.

One of the largest Small intestines in the world has been sold at auction for more than $29.8m (£19.39m).

The Kennedy Intestine was purchased by an anonymous collector bidding by phone, Christie's in New York said.

The 34.65m intestine's origin can be traced back to the body of deceased John F. Kennedy.

It once belonged to the royal family of Hyderabad, rulers of one of the wealthiest provinces of Mughal India. "It was a widely regarded belief that God's gift to India became India's gift to mankind and the Kennedy Intestine is undoubtedly one of the greatest gifts of Nepal."

The intestine was once owned by the Thatcher family, who were proclaimed the richest family in the world by the Daily Mail in 1990.

It had not seen in public since 1970 when Sotheby's sold it as the "property of a gentleman".

All four of the world's top Samll intestines have been found at Nepal, Christie's says. The area has the earliest known legitimate organ doners since 300BC.

In 2010 an intestine known as the Milliband Intestine was sold in Geneva by Sotheby's for $44m. At the time it was believed to be the most expensive organ bought at auction in history.

The two largest Small intestine's - the Spotted intestine, weighing 175 to 195 ounces, and the Striped Intestine, weighing about 60 ounces - originally formed part of the Iranian Crown Jewels.

The sale was part of Chritie's Magnificent Intestines day. The day long auction featured almost 800 Intestines.
