New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick has predicted that his new team's 2014 season will be "a dog fight".
"We're gonna have to fight tooth and claw," said the 33-year-old. "Not literally of course, not like two rottweilers literally ripping the flesh off each other, but something along those lines."
The Virginia-born star was once top dog at the Atlanta Falcons before being convicted for animal cruelty in 2007.
He returned to play for the Philadelphia Eagles but his 2013 season was dogged by injury. Asked if he could still perform at the highest level, he replied: "There's life in the old dog yet. And I should know - I know a dead dog when I see one."
Many Jets fans were said to be disturbed about the decision, but head coach Rex[1] Ryan appealed for calm. "It's been seven years - let's let sleeping dogs lie."
Meanwhile, his counterpart at the New York Giants, Tom Coughlin, announced that his team were looking for a player who abused cats, and when asked to comment on Vick's signing, simply said, "Dog, dog, dog, dog, dog."
