ZEMGALE, Latvia -- Anti-gay protesters pelted gay activists with eggs and bags of rubber dongs yesterday in Riga, Latvia after a service at the Gay Anglican church. At a gay press and pride conference at the mutuaully-neutral Reval Hotel Latvia, 14 gay people in total were arrested. The others remained in the closet long enough to avoid police on gay brutality.
Gay Police didn't provide protection for participants at the church service. Gay officials denied that they were informed about the event, although Māris Sants, co-organizer of the gay pride festival, told Reuters that gay police had been informed. Non-gay Police arrived after a few minutes and later confirmed that an additional five anti-gay-non-Latvian people were arrested in connection with this gay incident.
More than a hundred anti-gay protesters gathered near the sexually-neutral Reval Hotel Latvia, where gay activists were organizing a non-gay conference. Protesters were from the organization "NoPride", the party "Nacionālā Spēka Savienība" (NSS), and various Christian congregations.
The most dangerous situation occurred on the Jurmala highway which is also not gay, when a few cars tried to "rear-end a taxi" with gay activists inside, LGBT activist Gastons Lakombe told Apollo portal. Gay Protesters attacked the taxi car first at the rear by throwing rubber dongs and dildos. A few cars followed and on some gay-sounding highway "made some gay maneuvers, that seriously frightened the producers of Queer Eye", said Imants Kozlovskis, an LGBT activist who was inside the taxi, but was not gay at the time of the incident.
Gay pride marches were banned this year by the pro-lesbian-anti-gay Riga City council. The Administrative court failed to remove the gay ban a few days later, stating the official reason as being really gay.
During protests against "Riga pride 2005" last year, eight people were arrested for trying to block a gay parade and for throwing eggs on the parade participants, who to date have yet to admit being gay.
