Fuck is a profane word used in English to denote sexual intercourse, as an intensifier, or an insult. One of the most flexible words in the English language, it can be used as a verb, a noun, an infix, an imperative, an expletive, and an insult. It is cognate with German fuck, French fuck, Spanish fuck, Chinese fu ke (福克), and Japanese fuku. In fact, the word exists in almost all the world's languages, suggesting a human instinct to yell a labial-dental fricative sound followed by a velar plosive when distressed or when insulting someone.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Latin[edit | edit source]

“Deinde [Harves Venstus] Fuckor, fuckibus fuckum, clamavit ut se multi fuckores fuckere velle.”

The word derives from the Proto-Indo-European *fw₁unkés. It shares an etymology with wank, which was originally its reflexive form. The root became fuckere, with vankior (to wank) a deponent verb.

The cognomen fuckor was given to exceptionally fecund men, such as Harves Venstus Fuckor, a prominent senator who stood erect for women's rights. This title became Vaucker in Proto-Germanic, Foquier in Old French, and Fuciar in Spanish.

Japanese[edit | edit source]

The Japanese word fuku (ふく) and its alternative reading shito (して) are derived from Confucian and Buddhist texts. It roughly means "[you are] inferior" or "extremely undesirable".

Spanish[edit | edit source]

Due to the richness of Spanish vulgar words there are many ways to say fuck depending on the context. The most common is follar (literally, to fuck).

Me he follado una cabra (I fucked a goat). Note the use of the reflexive; a transliteration would say I fucked myself a goat. This would suggest that (for Spaniards) fucking an animal is a form of masturbation – somehow.

As an expletive the word coño (literally, a cunt) is frequently used: Coño, he olvidado mi capa de torreo. (Fuck ... I forgot my bullfighting cape.) Coño can also be translated as "the fuck": ¿Qué coño está pasando en el baño? (What the fuck is going on in the bathroom?)

As an adjective jodido is usually used as in Esé jodido hijo nuestro ha gastado 500€ en compras desde app. (Our fucking son has spent 500 euros on in-app purchases.)

You can combine all these together to give one gorgeous poetic Spanish sentence: Coño, hay una jodida cabra follando nuestro perro en mi jodida capa de torreo. (Fuck, there's a fucking goat fucking our dog on top of my fucking bullfighting cape.)

QXZQ-QZZXZ[edit | edit source]

The intelligent aliens of the QXZQ-QZZXZ system speak a language which is quite foreign to us. They speak a trinary language with sounds made of combinations of three possible sounds notated as Q, Z or X. Their language is heavily inflected and every word requires an excessive amount of information.

The translation of fuck as in sexual intercourse (CONSENSUAL DIRTY SEX IN THIS CASE) is: QZZZX-QZ-XQX-QZ-QXZ-XX-ZQZ-QZX-QXZX-XZ-QXQXQX-ZQ-ZX-X-XX-ZQ-ZXQZ-Q-ZXQ-XZ-QX-XZQ-ZQX-ZZQ-QXZQZX-QZXQX-QXZXZ-XZQ which is best translated as 12TH-CONJUGATION-SEMI-REGULAR-TRANSITIVE-NON-REFLEXIVE-VERB INTENTIONAL-ACTION AGENT SEMI-RECENT-PAST-TENSE DISTANT-LOCATIVE PRIVATE-ACTION IRRATIONAL-SUBJUNCTIVE-3RD-TYPE ACTIVE-REPRODUCTIVE-CASE-1ST-DECLENSION NON-HUMAN-ANIMATE-AND-INANIMATE-ABSENT-TONALS OMNI-DIRECTIONAL 3-SPACIAL-DIMENSIONS 1-TIME DIMENSION INFORMAL-SPEECH.

Fuck as an adjective is: QXQQ-ZXZ-ZZ which is best translated as: DESCRIPTIVE-UNAPPRECIATED-EXPLETIVE-WHY-ARE-YOU-STILL-READING-THIS-IRONIC-SUBJUNCTIVE.

Fuck as an exclamation is Q: even the QZXQ-QZZXZians need to let off steam quickly when they step on a Lego piece, get stuck behind a spaceship crash or accidentally get ejected into the fourth dimension.

History[edit | edit source]

Ancient Greece[edit | edit source]

“Fuck you!”

~ Profanes of Lesbos

Profanes of Lesbos, known as the "Father of Profanity", founded the Profanean School around 500 BC. He urged his followers to reject societal norms and yell "Fuck you!" to everyone they met. He believed that only by this can humans experience true ecstacy. Unfortunately, his followers all preferred LSD and he was put to death. Adherents of this school of thought still exist today, in the form of "I want to see the manager" Karens and abusive partners.

English[edit | edit source]

The word fuck first appeared as fouck or fucke around 1450, for example in the name of James Foucker, a cock-farmer of Penistone, South Yorkshire. Recorded as having 21 children (two legitimate), historians now believe that his name was a career-given one, similar to Baker and Cooper.

The word was the subject of a divisive argument during the Early 1800s, as Classicists argued that it should be spelt, and pronounced, "fock" (rhymes with cock) in accordance to the original French, while the Rationalists said that "fuck" (rhymes with suck) is the right way. The Houses of Parliament were graffitied with both spellings until King George III yelled "Fuck you all!" during a debate, proving the Rationalists correct once and for all.
