I've been thinking a lot about interlanguage links on Uncyclopedia. As you may know, the current list contains all the Wikia-hosted versions, but not all external versions. I've talked several times to Angela and others at Wikia about this, but without any firm conclusion as to how interlanguage links should work. The main concern is that external sites will be confused for ones hosted by Wikia if they are all on interlanguage links.

So I've come up with a possible alternative. A second interlanguage box for external sites. This wouldn't be restricted to the standard interlanguage codes, so could be set up for any site, including multiples of the same language. It should be editable by the Wikia community team, or maybe by admins, to make it easier to make change than the current method of nagging Jason. There is a mock-up at Wikia:User:Sannse/feature.

Obviously this needs coding, and it's not certain that everything I'd like to do with this is possible. Dawg may be able to try this, but that depends on his real-life commitments of course. Our technical team could, and I've added it to the list. But there are a lot of higher priority things there, so it may be a while before it gets to the top. So if anyone else is willing and able to code this, please let me know!

For this to work, it might need to change the format of the database. To do that, it is probably best to modify the core code. What we could do is code this for a generic potential mediawiki audience (which includes Wikimedia). Wikimedia for example, could use this along with their "in other languages" links, to link to other projects, such as wikiquote, wiktionary, and so on. If it almost exactly duplicated and was parallel to the interlanguage system, it might be adopted by the WikiMedia devs into the native MediaWiki code, and can then be modified to suit us. Splarka has asked a WM dev and they indicated it might be a useful addition. (Splarka says, see also SisterSites.php. This means nothing to me).

In the mean time, we've agreed to put the current external language versions in the default box, so we need an up-to-date and full list of what versions are out there and where. This doesn't mean that all future versions will be added, but it will be a stopgap until a clearer system can be set up. If there are multiple versions for the same language, we need to decide which version is to be linked, it's only possible to link one at the moment. That's a question for the whole community and for the editors of those versions in particular, so please add comments. Obviously the English version linked from other languages will be this one and not Carl's fork.

Carl, I'm guessing you have most of the information on what versions are around? That will give everyone a chance to see where we are. Thanks -- sannse (talk) 11:23, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

There are a few lists of versions around, but I'm a little hesitant about the idea of using a non-standard-format prefix for language links. There were a pair of pywikibots (I ran one, User:Szoferka presumably still runs the other) updating interlanguage links (I'd stopped running this on Wikia because so many languages were missing from the link table that it was making broken links). The idea was that if pt:Emo links to en:Emo and en:Emo links to fr:Émo-fif, then auto-add the link to pt:Emo on the fr: page (and vice-versa).
Creating fi: and fi2: as two languages might work (by configuring the robot to add fi2: as a "language"), but anything that uses multiple prefixes (such as see-also:memoryalpha:Star_Wars or sisterproject:UnNews:Voice_chat_feature_proposed_for_mobile_phones) isn't going to mean a thing to a pywikibot process. Fine if the proposed oddball links are just "The so-called experts also have a page about {{PAGENAME}}" (as these don't need to have the reciprocal language pointers) but possibly not OK for auto-generated interlanguage links. --Carlb 14:07, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
maybe it will need to keep the same format then, but specify which codes go in which box. It should be possible to separate them and make it clearer. -- sannse (talk) 10:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

OK, this is what I have so far, I don't think it's complete though. I'll edit further as I find more, please add if you see any that are missed. -- sannse (talk) 20:57, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Fi: is a fork (two wikis with different content, same language) with the external wiki as the larger of the pair but sv: is a project that has been moved a couple of times (hehu.se is the current location, the others are abandoned). Apparently a fork of pl: is still active at http: //wikihumor ovh org/w/index.php?title=$1 (and is being flagged as spam - not nice - because the original pl: wiki is on wikia:nonsensopedia: ). --Carlb 14:31, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Here's why it was added: wikia:Talk:Spam_Blacklist#wikihumor_ovh_org. Adding Wikihumor to this list is a joke in bad taste. You can add as well ED; or xx.uncyclomedia.org, becouse it's editable, so it's a wiki. I'm sure this topic is for update interwiki table, no for find all wikis in the world and connect them on equal terms. Wikihumor was tagged as a spam from simple reason: they was spamming; not any other and we were very patient before adding it. Szoferka 19:09, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Hrmmm. Spam you say...Spacer.gifSpacer.gifPremierTomMayfairChe.png RedPhone.png Unsoc.png Hammer and sickle.png 09:10, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
The only one with no activity seems to be the Wikia sv. Adn I think the Polish fork can be discounted from what Szoferka says. that just leaves the fi. and no. versions, two of each, all with activity. I don't know what to do about them, I can't see any solution other than a merge... but will that be possible? -- sannse (talk) 10:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
There are two prefixes no: and nn: which both refer to some version of the Norwegian language (the lesser-used 'nn:' being a nynorsk or "new norsk" which attempts to remove some foreign words from the language, IIRC). Both have separate Wikipedias but I don't think we're using "new norsk" or the nn: code for anything yet... --Carlb 13:49, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, which only leaves us with fi. We both set up homes for this wiki when it was down long term, then it returned. Since then it looks like you are hosting the original, but the Wikia is getting some edits. I would love to see this one merged, but have no idea what the community would feel about that. I do know that Wikia is not likely to agree to redirecting to the version on your servers. I'm really not sure what to do about this one -- sannse (talk) 07:36, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
There is a list of language codes in languages/Names.php - if a new two-letter code were created (that doesn't already have an existing language assigned to it in MediaWiki) the code and corresponding name would need to be added there. --Carlb 13:55, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
