Are you, by any chance, a fan on Iain M. Banks and the Culture? If not, I suggest you read some of his novels. I think you'd like some of the space ships. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:50, April 4, 2011 (UTC)

Good man. I use both Sleeper Service and Grey Area as names on various other websites. Have you read Surface Detail yet? I'm about 2/3 of the way through - not his best, IMO. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 17:00, April 4, 2011 (UTC)
no, i haven't, just got done with matter, and im trying to find a copy of excession, but matter wasn't his best either. I'd have to say player of games is so far my favorite. i used frank exchange of views on a couple of forums.

Excession is my favourite - I like the complexity of the story. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 15:05, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Barnes and noble doesn't even have it online, but they have every other book in the series... Shenanigans i say. --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall 15:07, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Amazon UK have eight copies in stock, so you should be able to get it from them - with Banks being probably the most successful sci-fi author writing today, chances are your own local version of Amazon will have it too even of you don't live in the UK. Awesome, thanks, im trying to get through VALIS by Philip K. Dick right now, sort of dry, but its all about an insane man's belief in God. --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall

How about Stephen Baxter? Read any of his? Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 15:24, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

I'm afraid i haven't heard of him, what has he written? --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall 15:27, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Quite a lot of stuff. He's much "harder" sci-fi than Banks in that he concentrates to a greater degree on detail and scientific accuracy. I especially recommend his Xeelee Sequence (Vacuum Diagrams being among the best sci-fi I've ever read) and the majority of his short stories. Awesome, I live in Texas, so i really don't know much about UK lit, but i read the foundation and ring world series, those were both pretty good. --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall 15:41, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Oh, Niven. I really don't get on with him, although The Mote In God's Eye is excellent. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 15:50, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

yeah, anyway, i did manage to read surface detail, the whole digital hell thing is a little iffy. --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall 16:09, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Everyone I know who has read SD says the same thing about the Hells - looks like SD isn't destined to become one of the highlights of his career! Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:26, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

I read that and still had so many questions, like, how exactly does one decide who goes to said hell? Does everyone go to a hell? Maybe he should have put some explanations in, technobabble would be welcome. --User is Experiencing a Severe Gravitas Shortfall 16:54, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

UnNews:"No tag-backs," declares Libya[edit source]

If you are going to pump two-a-days into the service, would you please take a moment to read our spiffy Style Guide? In particular:

  • Please get the dateline right.
  • UnNewses aren't about you (the reporter) and don't end with a moral-to-the-story or the reporter's prediction for the future. When in doubt, look at a newspaper.
  • Special bonus points for writing stories that actually relate to what's going on in the real world, you should pardon the phrase.

Thanks. PS--I changed the name of your story, among other things using a hyphen. Spıke ¬ 23:17 6-Apr-11
