Midgård[edit | edit source]

Midgård is the place of Norse Mythology and has a hilarious little linguistic detail about the Swedish translation of LOTR in fact calling Middle Earth "Midgård". Other known popular culture references are the Asgard (misspelled, as it's original form is Asgård) in ST-1 calling Earth Midgård.

What else..? well, needs work but has immense potential.

Any suggestions go to the TALK page.

Especially welcome is help with pictures, as I'm still a n00b.

Actually Tolkien used "Middle Earth" for two reasons, one was the via his love of Swedish/Norse/Germanic mythology upon which he drew heavily, whilst the other was from "Mediterrean" as in the sea located in the middle of the world. But mainly the Scandinavian mythology..... :) Also, check out this... -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)
Which brings us back to the beginning of a Swedish translation of the LOTR using "Midgård" for "Middle Earth" ;) ---- DameViktoria Heart_anim.gif Grew up with a butler, cook and a nanny, she qualifies, doesn't she? - (Contribs) - (Talk) - (Block log) 12:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

UnNews: Parents encourage drug experimentation over math homework[edit | edit source]

MATHFREAK.png
Daddy's skills are unsurpassable...
...until Little Jeremy (aged six) helps Daddy out.

SANTA CLARA, California, USA. A recent survey by Intel researchers proved shocking evidence of a major gap between the generations. A survey sent out to 142,300 homes in the United States (US) proved to bring with its 73,902 responses a ghastly yield of new information relating to modern drug abuse statistics. It seems like those blank years you should have stayed sober and awake in college classes are finally coming back to haunt our new generation of parents.

It is easier for a parent with their experimental years in college in recent memory or lack thereof to speak about drugs than to give their toddler a hand with grade school math homework. Why, you ask? Because the decline of education that hit an all time rock bottom in the US happened when those parents of today were themselves gradeschoolers.

Key Survey Findings[edit | edit source]

Ninety-one (91) percent of parents believe parental involvement is crucial to their children's academic success, with nearly 9 in 10 (89 percent) saying that talking to their children about the importance of math and science in the real world would help improve their children's performance and interest. However, as a shocking fact, there is an abundance of jealousy for the children's quality of education in the US, which has climbed to the top three in The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) surveys within the past decade in level of education. Parents do not wish to be intellectually challenged by their offspring, and have begun a lengthy process of introducing these children to narcotics.

So Bright! Sooo nommy! Who needs to count their dosage, when they can have a fistful?! ^_^
  • Despite recognizing the importance of math and science, parents say they are uncomfortable addressing these subjects with their children. More than 50 percent (53 percent) of parents of teenagers admit that they have trouble helping their children with math and science homework, unless the child is on Ritalin.
  • Nearly a quarter of parents (23 percent) who admit to being less involved in their child's math and science education than they should have allowed their child to smoke that first spliff a couple of years earlier.
  • Another 26 percent of parents who are less involved than they would like wish there was a one-stop shop with materials to refresh their drug stash so they can better help their children become the best they can become.

Intel believes that young people are the key to solving global challenges, and a solid math and science foundation coupled with skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and digital literacy are crucial for their success. Over the past decade alone, the company has invested more than $1 billion into a ridiculous ad campaign with publicity stunts such as this survey to ensure that parents are forced to face their own incompetence in the eyes of their children.
