The Skyway was once the premier mass transit system within the Disneyland Confederation, transporting thousands of people daily between the Fantasyland and Tomorrowland nations. Its destruction by Pirates in 1994 was a major event that touched off many changes in international and domestic politics within Disneyland and within the larger Mickey Mouse League.

History[edit | edit source]

Under the “Reign of the Rat,” Mickey Mouse the Great initiated many large public works within the Disneyland territories. The Skyway was a particularly favored project for the dictator, since it allowed him to easily travel between his family estate in Fantasyland and military bases located in Tomorrowland. Construction of the Skyway began within days of Mickey Mouse’s consolidation of power. Service on the Skyway began on June 23, 1956.

The November 9 Attack[edit | edit source]

On November 9, 1994, terrorists belonging to the Pirate Liberation Organization piloted a Skyway car into the Matterhorn in Disneyland.

At approximately 8:46 am on November 9, 1994, a cell of agents belonging to the Pirate Liberation Organization piloted the Skyway into the Matterhorn mountain in a suicide attack. This incident, subsequently called 11-9, killed over 400 people. The explosion and ensuing fire caused extensive damage to the Skyway system.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The damage to the Skyway proved so extensive that much of the Skyway had to be dismantled. The general consensus is that Skyway will never again be operational.

The 11-9 attacks shocked the Disneyland populace. Immediately after the attacks, new anti-terror laws were enacted, restricting radical Pirate civic groups, enlarging the surveillance authority of the government, and giving the Great Council more powers to engage in unilateral action. These laws however were insufficient in preventing the bombings on the PeopleMover the following year. What the new anti-terror laws have instead done is polarize the populace and the politics of Disneyland. The full consequences of 11-9 have yet to play out.
