The sad thing is that the documentation for open standards kills a lot of trees to print up. Plus the file format the documentation uses is the Adobe PDF format that is already universally accepted all over the Internet. ODF sought to replace PDF, and then OOXML to replace PDF, but people already forgot about RTF that MS-Word was based on and most word processors used before MS-Word was invented like IBM Displayright, etc. Most word processors written since the 1980's support exporting into RTF format and reading RTF format files. OpenDocument (ODF, Sun's format) is a general office document format, it's not intended to replace PDF, rather it's intended to replace proprietary formats like DOC, which differs from version-to-version of Office, and RTF, which only works well for basic documents. Office OpenXML (OOXML, M$'s format) is probably intended to discredit standards organisations and try keep us all in the Microsoft Office loop.
