UnNews:Steven Gerrard bewilders LA
Wednesday, July 8, 2015
Former Liverpool and England star Steven Gerrard was this week paraded in front of his new LA Galaxy fans, who had absolutely no idea what the Scouser was saying.
“He spoke in like a mish-mash of English and his own language, which I believe is called Scouse,” said Jerry Leadbetter, part of the Galaxy’s Riot Squad of tailgaters. “I got ‘thank you very much’ and ‘happy fourth of July’ but not very much else.
“However, he sent us over 10 crates of beer, which was cool of him. You will have to tell me how they say cheers in Scouse!”
Gerrard is set to have at least one person to talk to in LA, however. Former Galaxy star Landon Donavon spent several years at Liverpool’s city rivals Everton, and has told the press that although his Scouse is “rusty” he has “a pretty decent conversational level”.
And one of Gerrard’s new teammates, Johnny Astro, has even started taking Scouse lessons. “I said ‘eh, eh, calm down’ but he told me that’s not something they really say, it’s just something you get in Scouse textbooks. But he said my ‘alright la’ sounded good, so I am happy with that.
“My biggest problem is that there are a lot of guttural sounds in the language, and I am not sure if I have enough phlegm to say ‘kick it in the back of the net.’”
