Sopranos fans around the world have expressed their dismay at what they regard as the "anti-climatic" ending of the life of James Gandolfini, the show's star.
"We waited fifty-one years for this?" asked Jake Robinson, frequent blogger and contributor to the "Jersey Boys" fansite. "At the end, we just saw him, like, going to a film festival, and that was that?"
Gandolfini had long enjoyed praise for his performance as mafia boss Tony Soprano, but in recent years some critics complained that his career was dragging on with no signs of a satisfying dramatic arc. New York Times television critic Dan Kankerman said, "It's always the same trope with mafia stories. You wait for hours and hours, and then the guy dies in the most obvious way in the end.
"I mean, a heart attack in Italy? What is this, the Godfather all over again?"
However, not everyone's reaction was so coldhearted. Edie Falco, who played Tony's rather MILFy wife, told UnNews, "This is a horrible day in all our lives. I haven't had a decent part since the Sopranos, and I ask everyone out there - everyone with a heart - to pay homage to this beautiful man by going out and buying a box set of the series."
At the time of writing, the cause of the actor's death has not been confirmed, but preliminary forensic reports suggest a high level of cold cuts of meat were found in Gandolfini's stomach.
