New-age music is a "genre" of music created by a secret society that is mostly played in spas, hot springs, and anywhere ambient. A majority of new-age songs are instrumental, but some of them are sung. Not only is it a form of stress management, but it is also used for torture purposes (popularized by Total Drama Island). It is affiliated with new-age spirituality. While it is mostly acoustic, there are some people out there who would use it as an electronic form, even loud enough to make people's ears bleed.[1]

Definitions[edit | edit source]

New-age music is intended to create feelings for the listener rather than the instruments used in the song. As mentioned, there are acoustic and electronic forms, but there are madlads who would combine both of them to sound even worse.

There are two definitions that one would say when they first talk about new-age music, in a survey from the 1990s:

  • Over 75% of people say that it is mostly ambient, and it has the purpose of aiding relaxation in the listener's ears. They also claim that it could be used as an alternative healing method, yoga, or meditation. For meditation, the instrumentals must have a repetitive dynamic rhythm. It is mostly minimalist, and a majority of musicians in said genre are instrumentalists. However, there's a few people out there who are vocalists themselves and they aren't actually popular. But only one has actually gotten worldwide fame.[2] Not only that, but subliminal messages have been used in an attempt to heal the listener. Samplings of animals like whales, kittens, grues and more have been sampled, along with nature sounds.
  • The other 25% think that they have seen them in the new-age sections of record stores. It could contain almost any kind of music and is considered more of a marketing slogan.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of this genre came from professional musicians involved in the New Age movement. At first, people weren't interested in it, so the musicians decided to create it as a secret way to possibly torture people. Somehow in the 1980s, new-age music started getting popular. A majority of new-age musicians are inspired by many artists like Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and more. Allegedly, an ordinary hippie named Tony Scott made the first ever new-age album, but it was initially popular in the state of California, and then decades later, the new-age craze blew up. Several new-age albums would see the light of day and have the same effects as that new Tony Scott album, but none of them would be as popular as Enya's albums, as she has more noticeable hits including "Oreo Flow" and "Only Time", the latter in which became popular in memes.

As a torture method[edit | edit source]

This is where prisoners are kept in the new-age music torture method.

New-age music is a somewhat popular form of capital punishment around the world, but it's most commonly used in Canada. First popularized by the reality TV game show Total Drama Island in the 2000s, it has since then made hundreds of prisoners' ears bleed. A majority of prisons nowadays have a room full of speakers that are used for this specific type of punishment. In it, the prisoner would be locked up in a room filled with speakers. They wear headphones as well. The warden locks the door and starts up the music. Most of the time it'll be unknown artists from the prisoner's home country.[3] The volume would be increased multiple times until the prisoner's ears bleed. Kinda brutal, isn't it?

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. The electronic form is used as capital punishment in prisons.
  2. In that case, Enya. She is the first person that comes to mind when people think of new-age music.
  3. In Ireland, it's just Enya. That's all.
