Since vandalism is getting out of hand. I would like to propose the following.

If the vandal keeps coming back, range block their IP indefinitely, report to their ISP and have them take away their internet privilages. Then their ISP will call the FBI and they'll arrest the vandal.

I think this would be a good proposal.--Jtaylor1Small Egg.png 05:20, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

What if the vandal doesn't live in the United States? --Some user 05:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

There probably a lot of ISPs in all 90 countries.--Jtaylor1Small Egg.png 05:53, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

I just meant that if an ISP that isn't in the US calls the FBI, they'll probably have to pay excessive overseas long-distance charges, and then they might be angry at us for having to shell out all that money. --Some user 06:05, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Also, what if the FBI guys themselves are the vandals? Then you'd have the FBI guys calling the ISP to get their internet service back after the ISP had just called them to have them arrest themselves. --Some user 13:11, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
    • And another thing. What if you had a situation where the FBI guys were actually working undercover at the ISP to figure out who the vandals are? Then we'd call the ISP, get them to give up the identities of the vandals, and they'd call the FBI, who all turned out to be inside the ISP itself - thus blowing their cover, and getting them all killed. So not only would we be responsible for their deaths, we'd also be even worse off than before in terms of stopping the vandals. --Some user 02:05, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
I think I'll have to give you a userpage cookie for that one. And I don't generally give those out, so feel special. --Spin
      • Okay, here's another scenario. Let's say we report a vandal to an ISP, the FBI arrests him, and he goes to jail. They've got internet service in jails, don't they? So where's the incentive to stop vandalizing at that point? Besides, most penitentiaries are operating behind firewalls with NAT-translated IP's, so everyone at the prison will be auto-blocked. Won't that cause connectivity problems for the admins, since nearly all of them are convicted felons? --Some user 02:50, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
        • For the record, I have not yet been caught.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 03:07, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Full strength Against. Let's get real here; Most ISP's don't give a fuck, unless their user is engaged in kiddie porn distribution or online fraud (and most don't even do anything in those circumstances). Plus, it just makes us into whiny little bitches, trying to "punish" strangers for having the audacity to deface a site that's freely editable (and thus extremely easy to revert vandalism on). Our blocking policy is effective as it is, and if there's a spate of vandalism originating from the same ISP, it's also very simple to range block that ISP's address pool. -- Sir Codeine KUN VFP Bur. • Only for worst-case repeat vandals. We're not likely to get anywhere with the ISP unless there's been a LOT of vandalism from the guy. Trying to take away the person's internet is awfully unlikely. Oh, and Codeine, you need to double-embed your sig in a template, it's too huge to be subst'd in every VD topic. --User:Nintendorulez 11:36, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
  • For under certain conditions, such as an ISP operating an open proxy or providing access to spambot operators. May also be necessary as a temporary measure in cases of severe vandalism from dynamic IP's. I wouldn't expect the ISP to do anything about a problem just because they'd been IP-blocked from Uncyclopædia (we don't represent major revenue to them), the range block is just a last resort to stop whatever vandalism is coming from that address range when narrower blocks fail. --Carlb 12:06, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Speaking of bad ISP ranges and dynamic IP address, block AOL's IP range. --User:Nintendorulez 15:48, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
  • FYI: what you have stated in your explaination is 1) the current policy 2) rejects Jtaylor's proposed changes, which are indefinite blocks on normal ISPs and legal action in the real world to have a user's internet access removed. So should that be an "against" ? ---Quill.gifRev. Isra (talk) 00:03, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

  • For. The FBI isn't going to arrest anyone you tit, did you really think they'd arrest someone for being a bit of a twerp on this site? no, however, they will get a bollocking from their ISP (it's unlikely they'll suspend service since they want the money) it's simple as that. The way of doing it is simply to run a WHOIS on their IP and mail the abuse address --Olipro Icons-flag-gb.png Co-Anc (Harass) 21:57, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Or you can call their phone company and tell them to shut down the vandal's phone service.--Jtaylor1Small Egg.png 15:38, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

  • But what if they're on cable modem or... dare I say it... broadband wireless? It would be better to call their power company and have them completely removed from the electrical grid. They might still be able to vandalize for a few hours on laptop batteries or portable gas-powered generators, but after that, phzzzt. --Some user 15:48, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
