Scoring for Happy Monkey 2021 Competition[edit source]

(see full scores here)

Scores and review from Shabidoo[edit source]

Originality: 7/10

Turning it into a violent computer game was highly original. Unfortunately no images were added which was a missed opportunity for more originality. There were tons of phrases that I hadn't heard before

Creativity: 7/10

I love what you did with the topic (was the last thing I was expecting with a bridge article). Very clever referencing whist, tricks, rubbers and contracts the way you did. Highly creative. Discussing the mechanics of the game related to computer nerdery was very clever, for example the 7.5 minute limit due to exploits was very clever. Referring to 52 weapons was creative (also funny)

Humour: 7/10

The humour was in the dry retelling of the game via computer mechanics and the constant puns and references. Perhaps you could have introduced another type of humour but there were certainly funny moments including:

  • controller-less avant-garde
  • Diamond Queen' Flamethrower
  • The graphics of the game are generated entirely in the player's mind, so do not require a dedicated graphics card.
Final Score: 21/30
Suggestions:

The concept is great. But you might want to expand it narrowing the focus of the concept or even adding another one. Might the game itself serve another purpose (might it be part of a political conspiracy or part of a larger historical phenomena?). It could be a game specifically designed for the bourgeois or a niche game for hackers or computer nerds which would be a great place to add more material and develop the jokes further.

The article is funny but the jokes ought to be taken to a higher level. You shouldn't really rely solely on dry humour. For example with the buffer overflow, you could have given examples as to how they were exploited and referenced a historical event referencing a famous cheater like Maradona's hand of God. You can have him spend one hour considering which card to play before everybody gives up in boredom and in triumph he claims it was the "hourglass of God" or something like that. Or throw in a cheating Lance Armstrong. In the case of two bridges you could take the joke further, perhaps referencing the "trolly problem" version where one has to decide between dropping a stone off a bridge that will stop a train killing the driver vs. it ploughing into a bus full of children. Or the bridges could be an international land-bridge to Mexico involving migrants. If you want to keep out the political or absurd you can still give an elaborate example of convoys crossing bridges with lookouts, trucks playing chicken with one another and an eventual 20 car pile up). The scoring section would be a great place to give examples of absurdly complex scoring involving weird multipliers. As for tricks you have many opportunities to make stronger puns: magic tricks, prostitutes scoring tricks, people playing prank tricks on one another and if you want to venture there you can go truly deeply into the absurd. The final sentence is also great material for expansion. You can explain how the imagination works through technical sounding material. Explain how the human represents the playing table in his mind through terms like resolution, if there is a lag, how a player moves a card without clicking and dragging, is it in real time? does the brain see pixels? There is also the social aspect of the game. In the gaming world people discuss things over headsets, call each other noobs, get angry when partners make mistakes etc. You do have a dry narrative so it is possible to reference these things without turning it into something juvenile.

This article was in my top three and you should most definitely expand on it and add some images. You could add images that are different from the tone of the article (something artistic or overly graphic or strangely cartoonish) or directly related to the article which will require a lot of searching or creating your own images. Don't hesitate to ask other people to create images for you as some users love doing that. Hope you expand and get it featured one day!

Humour 8/10

Comment: This one is probably my favorites. This article's story was quite interesting, and the effort put into it was clearly a large amount. The final sentence is really the best part of it IMHO: "The graphics of the game are generated entirely in the player's mind, so do not require a dedicated graphics card."

Originality 7/10

Comment:Definitely quite a unique take on a card game. I don't have many things to say about this.

Creativity 5/10

Comment: I don't have much to say here. This article does demonstrate creativity from Hipponias, but isn't a "magnum opus" by any means.

Humour 2/10

Comment: Here's where I start whining a lot. The humor, first of all, it just felt very "inaccessible". I had to search up the original "World Bridge" thing to even remotely understand the humor. The short paragraphs, which do not delve into much detail, do not help either. I also could not understand how a PC game would be made available in the 1950s; this is "too random".

Total= 14/30

General Comment: Lousy formatting, I guess?
