New Microsoft "Laptop Hunters" Commercial Implies Macs Are Underpowered, Sexy

Okay, so if "Lauren" wasn't hip enough for a Mac, surely this "Giampaolo" character will be. However, the protagonist of Microsoft's new "Laptop Hunters" tell us right at the beginning of the commercial that he knows exactly what he wants: portability, power, and battery life. Giampaolo also claims to be "technically savvy" and therefore his opinion is to be trusted. To me, Giampaolo reminds me of a friend of mine in college: smart, but still an average, sexy gentleman. Giampaolo seems like someone I can relate too, someone I know already, someone I trust.

And yet, Giampaolo did not buy a Mac. (Whoops, spoiler alert!) After bouncing around the PC section, listening to Mr. Smooth Talkin' Electronic Fry's Guy, he announces that he is going to go take a look at the Macs. He immediately falls under their spell, practically drooling over it and is unable to stop himself from breathlessly exclaiming "so sexy!" However, he is dragged back to the PC section after reciting his lines and saying that Macs are "all about aesthetics".

At the end of the commercial, Giampaolo ends up with a highly portable 16" HP. Idiot that he is, he looks at the camera and proudly declares "I'm a PC, because I'm really picky."

Now, to be fair, even the biggest Apple fanboy will tell you that you can't get a MacBook with 4GB of RAM for less than $1500. However, you get what you pay for in both software and hardware. For Microsoft, a software company, to stand up and say that software bears no relevance in a computer buyer's decision making is rather moronic. When will Microsoft come up with something better than "PCs are cheap lol" as a marketing pitch?
