The signs reference the following verse in Chronicles:
“ | If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. | ” |
Despite the inspirational message, the campaign seems to be having an opposite effect. Most Americans we've talked to have expressed doubt that there is any hope at all.
Admitted agnostic Jerald Moore told us, "I saw one of those signs in a yard while driving to work and immediately, Aw man, We're so fucked."
Kevin Pimmers said, "We have two wars going on, terrorists plotting against us, an ever growing government, and an economy shrinking faster than Ramirez's testicles." He continued, "Oh, but, boy oh boy, at least we have a young Islamic Marxist in office taking care of it! That certainly helps me sleep at night." I could feel Mr. Pimmers' angst, although the last part we're he smeared my man Barack Obama deeply offend this journalist.
"The idea that we have any hope is laughable. Any fool can see that we're screwed."
The pessimistic doubt has begun to spread others in the Christian realm as well. Pat Robertson has reported as saying
Meanwhile, the fringe relgious leaders couldn't be happier. Not-so-popular evangelical Rev. Fred Phelps had this to say about the Prayer campaign: "You can pray all you want, but it won't do a bit of good. It's much too late. God is boiling furious and ready to destroy this evil fag-lovin' nation with all the might as he did with Sodom and Gommorrah". In which prompted the man standing next to him, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who suspiciously had his hand on Phelps' ass, to concurr with his well-known catchphrase "GOD DAMN AMERICA!!".
