Introduction to Wikis[edit | edit source]

A wiki [1] is a website that allows users to add, remove, and edit content. It is a collaborative technology for organizing information on web-sites. The first "wiki" was developed by Ward Cunningham in the mid-1990s and was called WikiWikiWeb. The word "wiki" means "quick" or "fast" in Hawaiian, meaning content can be created and viewed quickly without fuss.

Wikis allow for linking among any number of pages. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring.

Perhaps the most popular and wellknown wiki is Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia which anyone can edit. However it is not the only wiki out there on the Internet. There are wikis for every possible topic, community group and even ones based on popular TV shows and computer games!

Some such examples are:

  • Uncyclopedia - a parody encyclopedia about misinformation and humour. Currently has 37,448 articles!
  • WoWwiki - a wiki devoted to World of Warcraft.
  • NZLinuxWiki - a wiki for NZ Linux users and enthusiasts.
