Logan is a city in Cache County, Utah characterized by being the only thing separating the civilized denizens of Utah from the unwashed barbarian hordes of Idaho. It keeps BYU-Idaho students and graduates from corrupting Northern Utah's society in much the same way that Draper, Utah keeps Salt Lake County on the free side of the Zion Curtain. Logan, sadly, has not been respected for this, even though some analysts see Idaho as an even bigger threat to Northern Utah than Utah County.
Logan is located in northern Utah, north of Ogden on the Logan River; it is perhaps the safest city in northern Utah, as it is a full 122 miles north of Brigham Young University. The city was founded in 1859 by Mormon settlers and has been the location of the Logan Utah Temple since its dedication in 1884. It is home to the main campus of Utah State University, founded in 1888, the only quasi-decent college in the entire state. It is also a major producer of cheese and other dairy products.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The city lies near the eastern edge of Cache Valley on the western slopes of the Bear River Mountains, the northernmost branch of the Wasatch Range. The eastern portions of the city are constructed on top of an ancient alluvial fan with very steep slopes down to the rest of town and the Logan River bottom. To the west lies a flatland that contains farmland and marshes. Thus, Logan is the only city in Utah to be built on solid ground, a truly shocking occurrence in the Western United States.
To the north and south lie the quickly-growing residential suburbs of Logan. Logan also lies at the western terminus of Logan Canyon. All these things aid to make Logan the only decent place in Utah.
