halter (plural halteres)

1. A small rope attaching the wings of flies to their bodies. They can be removed by a small boy with a small conscience with a small scalpel.
2. A defective Turing machine. One that halts within a finite number of steps. Halteres can be re-used by removing the wings and recycling them as cellular automata.
