Bryson denied claims that he has since moved into Rudy's kennel.

Wayne Bryson, a 19 year-old from Lancashire, was spared jail after admitting to engaging in an a-paw-ling act of sexual penetration with Rudy, a four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The video lasted for 30 seconds and the court heard that Bryson did not ejaculate and he did not "send it round", which presumably would have made it worse.

He was caught when girlfriend Amber Hickling, 18, looked through his phone for pictures of their child. She spotted the footage which showed the dog "shaking in a backwards and forwards motion". Bryson later quipped to police that "shaking backwards and forwards was more than Amber ever managed."

Miss Hickling, who broke up with Bryson shortly afterwards, had to get rid of Rudy because she could "not bear to look her in the eye". Hickling is thought to be the first woman to utter the phrase: "I would have been surprised to catch him cheating, but to catch him shagging my dog was wrong on a different level."

She went on to say "When I heard the verdict, I was very upset. The judge says that a 4-month sentence is 28 months in dog years, but I don't think that's the point."

As well as receiving the sentence, suspended for two years, Bryson was told he must never be alone with an animal again, and especially not in romantic restaurants.

When he was sentenced a man in the public gallery shouted: "He is a beast, a dog has got no voice." James Doberman QC, prosecuting, shouted back, "He's not a beast, that was the whole nature of the offence" while Tim Rover QC, defending, added, "A dog has got a kind of voice - it can woof."

Neighbours of Bryson also expressed their disgust at his crime. Jane Barker, said: "I think it's disgusting. You hear about it in foreign magazines but you never think that they would be on your doorstop. It's something foreigners do in foreign countries. I've got one of those magazines somewhere, actually, let me see if I can show you what I mean."
