Yankees management took a dim view of Mr. McCarver's remarks, comparing their baseball club to Nazis.

NEW YORK -- Baseball commentator Tim McCarver on Saturday compared his employer, the New York Yankees, to Nazi Germany.

Mr. McCarver, during the fourth inning of a Yankees-Rays broadcast, lamented the lack of recognition for ex-manager Joe Torre, comparing it to Hitler's treatment of his former generals. They "used to take those pictures that they had...taken of former generals who....they had shot....and airbrushed the generals out of the pictures," said Mr. McCarver. "In a sense, that's what the Yankees have done with Joe Torre."

In past years, Yankees ushers--stern, burly, uniformed men who herd Yankees fans into cattle-car-like confined spaces--were criticized for their brusqueness with fans who wanted to visit the restroom or remain seated in the seventh inning while the Yankees played a patriotic song.

Mr. McCarver did not relate the Yankees' treatment of fans to the gas chambers, although a potentially lethal pepper-steak sandwich is served at Yankee Stadium. And play-by-play partner Kenny Albert pointed out that the father-son dynasty did not seek to burn copies of Mr. Torre's autobiography.

Mr. Torre was not even shot, and continues to evade Yankees assassins as he continues his managing career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
