Fred Rogers threw his sneakers in the ring today in the 2028 Presidential campaign. His national campaign tour begins in the Town of Make Believe.

"It is time we got out of our homes, stopped hiding behind our smartphones and computer screens, and started introducing ourselves to our neighbors. All of our neighbors. To our rich neighbors, to our poor neighbors, to our neighbors next door, up the street, and down the street, to our neighbors from every nation and from every race and from every class and from every creed. Just get out and walk and offer a handshake. It is good exercise, and it is good for the body, heart and soul. It is time we stepped in each other's sneakers for a day. It is time we started sticking up for each other and lifting each other up instead of tearing each other down. It is time we learned about each other's careers, about each other's hobbies, about each other's pets and about each other's skills and about what people inspire you and why. It is time to remember what is good, pure, and beautiful, and what brings joy."

"It is time to start reminding each other why hard work is important, and why it can be enjoyable. It is time to start reminding each other about the importance of providing for those who do not have as many resources or as much talent. It is time to start reminding each other why it is important to be both responsible and compassionate. It is time to start reminding each other about both the importance of stay-at-home moms and dads, and the importance of people who go to jobs or own businesses. And it is important not to compare each other with each other in a negative light. We need to remind each other of the importance of blue-collar workers, white collar workers, and volunteers. We need to Bring Kindness Back. We need to remember why we Live, Laugh and Love. We need to remember why it is important to help the sick and the poor, so they do not stay sick and poor. We need to remember that the disabled and the elderly can still make important contributions. We need to remember to Care. We need to remind each other how to lift each other out of sadness, despair and anger. We did it before, and we recovered from the Great Depression of the 1930s by lifting each other up. Make our country Neighborly Again. Thank you."

The response from the animals in Storybook Town was overwhelmingly positive. "Amen, this is what we need, praise be!" quacked Nunny Goose. "This is actually less depressing than usual", commented Eeyore the Donkey. The Cheshire Cat reappeared from behind a Grin that said it all. A unicorn appeared, lifting its horn and spreading rainbow sparkles. Pluto barked and wagged his tail enthusiastically.

A ghost that looked suspiciously like George Michael commented, "that's what I mean by Freedom, the Freedom to Enjoy what you do". A boy with round glasses and a scar on his forehead vowed to defend Mr. Rogers against the Dark Arts and suggested that Mr. Rogers be awarded an honorary diploma from Hogwarts. Steamboat Willy the captain, watching from the deck, commented, "He's welcome aboard anytime." Aurora the queen formerly known as Sleeping Beauty, gushed "I'd kiss him if I hadn't already found my Prince Charming!"
