Both Leverage and the US government were on shutdown in October, with the latter closure lasting two weeks. On the 18th of October, serial killers, perverts and thugs expressed their dismay at the return of law and order.

October also left LeBron James dismayed: once again, the NBA start was passed over for the Nobel Prize for physics.

Attempts to give the month a more upbeat feeling ended badly. Indigenous People's Day on the 12th led to a traditional but disturbing outbreak of smallpox and the return of Big Tex was met with derision. Another ceremony centred around return - Amherst College's Homecoming - was also soured after an email surfaced suggesting rape was inevitable.

At the end of the month, President Obama (right) finally admitting he was addicted to eavesdropping after weeks of NSA-related revelations and suspicious American understanding of Apple Strudel recipes.

Finally, however, on the 30th, a symbol of reconciliation came to us, when when the tomb of Martin Luther King was discovered. Only time will tell if the great man can unite the divided masses, or if he is past his best.
