Talk:Ricky Gervais

This doesn't seem to really be that funny. It's just basically the wikipedia article with a few snide comments stuck in.

Sorry, even after the explanation given below, it still isn't funny. Besides, the 'joke' behind an article shouldn't have to be explained - it should be evident from the way it's written, which I don't think it is here. If most people don't get the joke, then more often than not it's the author's fault.

It comes over as shamelessly hagiographic - i.e. arse-kissing. Ricky Gervais walks on water ... whereas it's usually on thin ice ...

See below for my response to this. I'm still surprised so many people complain that it's hagiographic, that's the point and it's so hagiographic that it's intended to make Gervais look insecure (see all the cheap jibes at other comedians). But, like I said, the Michael Jackson entry had the same problem and it was written over an abusive, venom-filled entry which is what this would become if some people got their way --Zarbag 19:02, December 23, 2011 (UTC)
Additionally, part of the joke is that some wikipedia entries are allegedly edited by their subjects to make them look good. This is intended to look like it was edited by Gervais's self-aggrandising on-screen persona, hence the category at the bottom. --Zarbag 19:04, December 23, 2011 (UTC)

Totally agree, he did a training video for microsoft which could be a source for jokes oh and no mention of his podcast... needs rescuing Tt22 19:38, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Not funny July 2008

Since a few people don't seem to get the joke (see also: the Michael Jackson entry) the article is parodying the self-satisfied, self-aggrandising persona people associate with Ricky Gervais. If you read the whole thing (especially the "Allegations of Fraud" bit) this should become rather more obvious. Basically, the article is written from the point of view of Gervais/a Gervais fanboy who feels the need to defend Gervais against obvious criticisms (ie that he failed in his original career, moved into comedy, made a career about of doing "edgy" gags under the veneer of irony and arguably-accidentally scored a massive hit with "The Office") and constantly put-down his (often more widely-respected) rivals. Slagging off Gervais is fine but it should be done in the style of the rest of the article. --Zarbag 11:24, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I made some minor corrections and removal or redirection of the red links. I also changed the Mississippi Vicars and sherry to Mississippi preachers and Jack Daniels . --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate). 12:04, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
