No idea if you're right or not, Socky - partially because your knowledge of Hebrew and Yiddish is almost certainly greater than mine, and partially because due to both languages being transliterated into whatever-it-is that this alphabet's technically called (which is something I ought to remember) there's no agreed spellings for a lot of words. There is a formal transliterated formula for Hebrew (which is quite horrible). I don't think there's one for Yiddish. BTW, Rabbi, you know we're both going to hell for the whole Rabi "Psycho" Schneoorson. ~Jewriken.GIF 15:38, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I knew it as soon as I made that picture of him with the big knife. I'm quite friendly with our local Chabad rabbi - think I'll keep quiet about this article. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:42, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
That knife suits him though, don't you think? He looks like a mean muthafucka. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 18:38, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I've always found it quite interesting how shiksa and chick seem to be pronounced quite similarly, and could often be used to describe the same persons (though certainly not always), but are not in the closest etymologically related. They could be, since Shiksa is related to German. And English is a mishmash of everything. ~Jewriken.GIF 15:51, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
It'd still seem unlikely though. Shiksa (at least originally) having a very negative connotation, and a chick being a cute little birdie. I've often wondered if chav comes from chavver, meaning mate as in a friend or acquaintance, rather than as is commonly supposed from a Romany word for a lad too, what with Yiddish having had an influence on East End London schlang...er, I mean slang. If so, it'd be odd how chav didn't appear until the last few years though, since most of London's Jews made their fortunes and buggered off to Golders Green and the other suburbs decades ago. I didn't even know the word chav existed, until I first laid my eyes upon Uncyclopedia. And I saw it was the worst (which is Dutch for sausage). In Yiddish (and German) it's wurst - only ours are made out of cows, chickens, Christian children's blood etc. They're just as horrible as pig ones, though. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 09:29, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
