Yeah, so im writing a new article for the 1st time. how do i add pictures with captions to the side of the page?

Replace the Image:constablelandscape.jpg in the following coding with an image you have uploaded and [[image:constablelandscape.jpg|thumb|right|A landscape by John Constable.]] makes that thing there on the right. You can upload images from your computer with the Upload File option in toolbox, which is below the search query box on the left. Hope this helps. --
