Writing articles is not a requirement, but it may be better for you than editing other people's articles. Editors here can be possessive sometimes, and unfortunately not everyone thinks everything is funny. To get started on your own, it's recommended that you create the article in your userspace (for example, User:Haywood G. Blowmee/sandbox) so you can edit at your leisure.
