Ook! is a programming language designed for and by orangutans and librarians. The language, which was invented in the pre-evolutionary days, is comprised entirely of symbols involving the word "Ook". Some scientists have theorised that this is indeed the origin of the name of the language.
History of Ook![edit | edit source]
The language was invented by the High Council of Apedom, several years before Charles Darwin arrived with ideas about evolving the species. Fortunately, before the apes could evolve, some very intelligent ones invented computers and then, in an attempt to find a use for them, went on to invent computer programming.
Only having their own limited vocabulary to choose from, and having already studied and unveiled the secrets of the Universal Turing Machine the year before, the scientists of Apedom naturally created a language with the following characteristics:

The language has 3 keywords — "Ook.", "Ook?", and "Ook!" — which can be combined in eight different ways to form the language's statement repertoire.

In addition, Ook? Ook? is considered extremely bad table manners and should be avoided at all costs.
Note that this language implements an extremely complex pointer-monkey relationship. Since the pointer accesses memory directly, the monkey should not be African.
The language may seem simple, but it is actually just as powerful as any other ape, due to its property of being Turing-complete. Note the ASCII and flea-related commands, which give the language these properties.

This is an example of how to program in Ook!. This will cause the statement "Ook! Ook." ("Hello Apedom!") to be displayed through standard output, unless it is dinner time:

Either that, or it converts the universe to ASCII art, prints it, gets it eaten by the dog, and thus causes its untimely destruction. I'm not sure. Please do not run this program unless you are.
Post-Ook Era[edit | edit source]
After having completed their evolution, the orangutans said "Ook. Ook! Ook! Ook?" which roughly translates as "let us now invent a new and better programming language such that we do not have to code in this highly inefficient yet still Turing-complete and logically sound language which has been used since the time of our founding apes."
The new language was Ook++.
