<3 (less than three) is the mathematical expression of affection, most commonly seen on the internet. Less than three was first postulated by Pythagoras when he was attempting to develop a universal sign of commitment between two people. "Less than three", he thought, just made sense since two is less than three. There is a consensus among people nowadays that this explanation is convoluted and that "<3" simply looks like a sideways heart.
