The Godfather, Part III is the third film in Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trilogy. It completes the story of Michael Corleone, a Mafia don (originally created by Mario Puzo) who tries to legitimize his crime empire. The film stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy Garcia, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Robert Duvall, Bridget Fonda, and Winona Ryder.
Much like the first two films in the trilogy, The Godfather Part III was a critical and commercial success, earning dozens of year-end accolades, including seven Academy Awards in 1990. Particularly notable was Ryder's tour-de-force performance as Mary Corleone, an incredibly difficult role upon which much of the film believability rested. Film critic Leonard Maltin spoke for many when he said, "I don't even want to think about how this movie would have turned out if they cast someone who had limited acting experience in that role — fortunately for all of us, Francis Ford Coppola is too smart to do something that monumentally stupid."
