Greco Roman Wrestling[edit | edit source]

Greco-Roman Wrestling is a sport that was invented and practiced by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and is directly responsible for the evolution of the sport of wrestling that we know today.

Origins[edit | edit source]

Wrestling as an amateur sport had been around since the dawn of time. Most recorded historical examples of such practices were from holy quests or to defend such as those of Hercules, Cadmus and Theseus and Perseus. When these heroes returned home, there was considerable fan-fare and celebration. This was noticed particularly by Thersites, a local bow-legged hunchbacked market tradesman. He knew that he was superior to them mentally if not physically and this angered him. He resolved that he should use them to find his fortune. He first began producing togas with using the heroes likenesses, and replica dolls for the children to play with. This brought him considerable wealth, as the townspeople were keen to show the heroes their devotion with his products. On returning from destroying the hydra, Hercules noticed a child wearing a toga saying "Heracles doesn't HIDE from anyone" with a drawing of him wearing the impenetrable hide of the Nemean Lion.

After asking the child where he got the toga from, he located Thersites and saw the wealth he had acculmulated. He threatened to beat Thersites if his didn't share his fortune with Hercules and the other heroes. Using his superior intelligence, thersites managed to persuade Hercules to give him exclusive merchandising rights for his twelve labours and of his future quests, and to discuss similar matters with Perseus, Theseus and Cadmus. The heroes all agreed, for a small percentage.

Soon, the heroes had conquered all that needed to be conquered in the ancient world, merchandising began to generate less and less revenue. This had Thersites in a pickle, as he needed the money to maintain his many concubines and lavish lifestyle. He devised a away, to keep his heroes fresh until a new quest came along, and would generate considerable public interest and revenue ... having them fight each other.

Greek Wrestling Federation[edit | edit source]

Thersites knew that genuine fighting amongst the heroes could cause serious injury, and he needed them in very good shape in case there was a quest (from which the most money could be earned). He decided that the best way would be to choregraph fights and have the winners predetermined. Thus he set a trend for the style of wrestling we see in the present day.

He began using his contacts with Hercules to develop a full roster of heroes, and then finding villains for them to fight against.

The federation went form strength to strength, and soon became a nationwide fascination, partcularly with Greek peasants.

Wrestle Superium Est[edit | edit source]

Thersites and his band of heroes knew that sports entertainment was going from strength to strength, and in 1985 BC, saw the time was right to broadcast their first pay per view. To be billed as the Ancestor of them all, Wrestle Superium est was the best string of matches that the team could string together.

  • Toga Match Eros Special guest referee.
  • Triangle Match: Pythagoras vs. Isosceles vs. Hipparchus
  • Fleece on a Pole Match Jason vs. Phrixus
  • Championship Match Hercules vs. Achilles (Achilles submitted to the ankle lock.)

Oricalcum Scandal[edit | edit source]

Thersites was forced to face trial when it was alleged that he was supplying many of his top heroes with the prohibited substance Oricalcum. He was eventually cleared of all charges. The trial however caused a considerable rift between Heracles and Thersites and effectively terminated their working relationship, even though Heracles testified on the GWF's behalf. The scandal effectitvely destroyed the child friendly image that the company had began to cultivate.

Roman Championship Wrestling, and a change in the industry[edit | edit source]

Long term fans of the sport began to go elsewhere for their thrills as they found the childish characters and storylines. They began to be drawn to Roman Championship Wrestling
