Etymology

The name is generally thought to come from the the non-English (inferior language) word půlka ("little half") This is a reference to the short half-steps in the dance. The word has been influenced by the profane and highly offensive Czech word Polka ("Polish woman/girl").

Polka (plural Polkas)

1. A lively Central European dance and also a genre of dance music familiar throughout Europe and the Americas (non English speaking of course). It originated in the middle of the 17th century in an arcade on a "dance platform", or stage on which the player hits colored arrows laid out in a cross with their feet. When melted down into its basic elements, polka can be combined with dots to form the rarely seen polka dots.

Styles

There is a variety of styles of contemporary polka.

One of the types found in the United States is the North American "Naked-style polka," which has roots in Chicago strip clubs; two sub-styles are "The Chicago Nipple Twist" (the customer uses the breast of strippers similar to how a stress ball is used) and "Chicago Booty Stank" which is identical to the "Nipple Twist" except the dancer is the least hygienic stripper available. Traditional dances from this region reflect the influence of polka-dancing immigrants (freaks). In the 1980s and 1990s, several American bands began to combine polka with various rock styles such as granite, marble, and sandstone.
