First, on concept: before even starting this piece a reader will probably form some preconceptions about it, mostly cliches. For example, I assumed it would be a male-viewpoint piece about how much women are impressed by large penises. To some extent that appeared to be the case: lines like "It was just too much!" seem like a chap's daydream about what he wishes women would say when they view his unit. I expected that.
The last bit, where Freud turns out to have a tiny dinker, was a good reversal.
I suppose, as I ponder it, that I was disappointed because I was not surprised by the piece. A lot of humor consists of the unexpected: in jokes, if the hearer guesses the punchline before the joke is finished then the joke usually falls flat. The real crackers are the jokes in which the punchline is completely unexpected but perfect.
(To be fair, there are genres of comedy where the expected become humorous: the audience waits and waits for Chapman to hit Idle with the pie in the face, and when it finally happens they roar.)
However, I would hold that because the title of this article raises expectations in the reader -- "Oh, it's going to be about how women are scared/excited by monstrous cocks" -- then if it is going to have Teh Funny it must find a way to turn those expectations on their head. Humorously.
There is a fundamental misogyny implied in the idea that women are catastrophically affected by an immense penis. Some readers may feel bored by this; misogyny is a rather passe concept. The (female) comedy team French and Saunders mocked it in the skits where they were made up as sad middle-aged men so randy that speculating whether the 90-year-old Queen Mum was a woman with "a woman's needs" sent them into a frenzy of dry-humping.
Now. All this is just my opinion, and I expect this particular subject is one on which opinions will vary widely. So take my critique with a grain of salt. ----OEJ 04:55, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
