The news that a Nigerian man has received 20 lashes after an Islamic court in the northern city of Bauchi convicted him of homosexual offences has been received with bemusement.
Lateef Adeluyi was told by the presiding judge that, "Homosexuality is an immoral urge. The only way I can think of purging it from your system is to order you to bend over while another man lashes you with a whip."
Adeluyi seemed to react solemnly to the verdict, although some witnesses claimed that they believed he was humming YMCA as he was led away.
We interviewed Alan Chambers, who hit headlines last year when it was revealed that, despite being a gay who claimed to be able to convert Christians, he harboured Christian feelings himself.
"It's disgusting in this day and age that people believe homosexuality can be beaten out of you," Chambers told us. "And frankly, if physical violence is your approach, I don't think getting a big black whip out is the way to go."
"It's like sentencing a paedophile to being spat on by children."
After being told that the man was also ordered to pay a fine of about $30 (£18), Joseph added, "So you end up thirty dollars down and getting whipped by a big African guy? That's just a Saturday night around here."
