An individual celebrating Mclennon Monday. Note the subtle Two of Us pride flag.

“ This accurate and factual film is endorsed by all persons depicted herein and such persons, as well as their families, hiers, and related parties, have participated in the making of this film. Legend has it that in 1976 - six years after the bitter breakup of the Beatles - Paul McCartney paid a surprise visit to John Lennon at his apartment in New York City. This film makes all attempts to document what occurred at such a meeting. It is a work that faithfully adheres to the homoerotic relationship of two blokes from Liverpool, and the gifts they gave us. ”

~ Introduction to the film Two of Us (2000), the film that began the event

Originating in Canada, Mclennon Monday is a weekly occasion observed around the world, bringing together people of all backgrounds to discuss and celebrate the relationship between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Some participants insist that the relationship was really with McCartney's replacement, Faul, a topic that remains a point of contention amongst those involved in the celebration. Despite this debate, Mclennon Monday has become one of the major events on unpopular social media sites such as Tumblr, where it has a notable presence amongst approximately five users on the website.

Background: Who Were The Beatles?[edit | edit source]

The Beatles were a little-known group that emerged in the 1960s, but only gained moderate fame when they began to emulate the style of The Monkees. Despite inferior talent, a less diverse sound, and an entire lack of the Texan accent that had set The Monkees apart, The Beatles were able to gain a small following. Their music has been moderately popular amongst the LGBTQ+ community, and many of their own songs have been described by members of the band as being "fruity."

Two of Us (2000)[edit | edit source]

Well-known Mclennon enthusiast Michael Lindsay-Hogg set out to create a documentary that accurately portrayed the relationship between John Lennon and Faul for a Canadian television network. Critics have noted similarities in its themes to other important queer films of the 2000s, and the impact that it had on later media. In particular, Two of Us was a forerunner to the award-winning 2005 film, Brokeback Mountain, as both movies revolved around the complications that arise when men choose to lead unfulfilling lives in the pursuit of conventionality while attempting to repress their feelings from longstanding relationships with other men. Lauded as one of the most important Beatles-inspired films of all time, this show was directly responsible for the rise of Mclennon Monday. It has been said that this movie is best enjoyed on public transportation, such as a Megabus to Toronto.
