SAVANNAH, Georgia -- Gregg Allman, arguably the George Washington of southern rock with his Allman Brothers Band, has died. He was 69 and was once married to Cher. Allman, who had Hepatitis C died from cancer.

Allman's brother Duane, the band's only other namesake, died in a Harley crash in 1971. Bassist Berry Oakley followed a year later, suffering the same fate. Drummer Butch Trucks died back in January of this year, also 69. Guitarist Dicky Betts is still alive.

The band's hits included "Midnight Rider," "Ramblin' Man," "Jessica," "Whipping Post," and "Statesboro Blues." Gregg Allman played a Hammond B-3 organ while providing lead vocals.
