The Church works to caution parishioners against all forms of moral pollution.

SODOM, London, Thursday — The Roman Catholic Church is not expected to win an exemption from new anti-discrimination laws, following the row over gangs of parishioners hunting gay couples on horseback with hounds. Its agencies are demanding an opt-out, so that they may act according to their religion.

The Equality Act, due to come into effect in England, Wales and Scotland in April, outlaws discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities and services on the basis of sexual orientation. Catholic leaders say Church teachings prevent it from allowing its parishioners to treat homosexuals as if they were human.

The Church of England has backed the Catholic Church in its entreaties. The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York have written to Tony Blair arguing that "rights of conscience cannot be made subject to legislation, however well-meaning."

Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly Slitheen, who operates entirely per the dictates of her Opus Dei masters, is reported to be pushing for an exemption to the legislation. "We seem to be living in a world where people who have strongly held views are somehow derided for that. Their steadfastness to their cause should be admired! Is it right for us to expect someone to abandon everything they believe in because of the prevailing majority view? Do they abandon their faith, their rack, their branding irons? Have some mercy!"

Constitutional Affairs Minister Harriet Euro has said there was no scope for exemptions to the legislation. "We will stay true to our commitment in tackling discrimination in terms of sexual orientation, gender, race, height, weight, language, ability, intelligence or species," she told New Communist magazine. "Until the Pope not only makes homosexual intercourse a mandatory part of mass but also personally demonstrates the proper use of a condom in Vatican Square on a male who is actually over the age of consent, they are guilty of genocide under European Commission regulations. You can either be against discrimination or you can allow for it. In any case, you will be assimilated."
