21 years after its release, there have been an interesting amount of mods created for DOOM. REELism is one of those mods. Created by 300 Pounds in late 2011, it is a tongue-in-cheek variation on the "invasion" gameplay. It offers large, wide-open maps in which random monsters and weapons will constantly spawn during themed rounds. The "reel" mechanism also provide other game-changing effects which can help or, usually, hinder the players. Everything is filled with homages to classic gaming, in-jokes, and all-around silliness.

The extreme randomness of the mod makes the gameplay rather unpredictable, since it is possible to obtain extremely unfair combinations as well as ridiculously easy ones.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Gameplay is divided into several "rounds" each lasting 60 seconds, with a different combination of randomly chosen slots that affects gameplay. Each of the three reels have different themes to them; the effects in the first reel are basic modifiers such as low gravity or infinite ammo, the second reel either affects what weapons are spawned and ammo dropped by enemies, or transforms the player. Finally, the last reel affects what enemies are spawned during the round, with any surviving enemies remaining even after the round ends. After a certain number of rounds has passed, a boss will appear and the player must defeat it to win the game.

The Modes[edit | edit source]

The various modes present in REELism include: Standard, Endurance, Infinite, and Boss Practice.

Standard[edit | edit source]

Standard is the normal mode of play, in which the players must endure five rounds before fighting the boss.

Endurance[edit | edit source]

In Endurance, the player must survive ten rounds before the boss appears.

Infinite[edit | edit source]

In Infinite, the player must survive for as long as he can before he is killed, with a boss appearing after every five rounds.

Boss Practice[edit | edit source]

Pretty straightforward. Boss Practice simply pits the player against a boss with no other monsters spawning.

The Enemies[edit | edit source]

There are a wide variety of enemeies present in REELism, most of which come from other titles made around the time of DOOM. In fact, here are some notable mentions, which will include the following: A brief description of the enemy, the name of the reel which spawns it, miscellaneous notes about it, and where did it come from. Note: I will not cover enemies from id's past titles because we already know about them and listing them would be redundant.

Giant Eyeballs[edit | edit source]

Reel spawned: "Optical Invasion"; Origin:Corridor 7

Giant flying eyeballs which shoot laser beams at players, dealing with them shouldn't be a problem as long as you have decently powerful weapons.

Beggars and Peasants[edit | edit source]

Reel spwaned: "Night of the Living NPCs"; Origin: Strife

Here, these guys don't do crap. Being NPCs, they are really easy to kill and to satisfy the Catharsis factor.

Cowboys[edit | edit source]

“Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be REELism Slots.”

~ Description of the Quick Draw reel

Reel spawned: "Quick Draws"; Origin: Outlaws (I think that they come from Blood though)

These are just your typical cowboys. Luckily, you have monster infighting to help you.

Bronies[edit | edit source]

Reel spawned: "Friendship is Tragic"

Depicted as fat neckbeards in jeans - Bronies are one of the enemy slots, and don't do much but neigh and talk about the show in stilted, high-pitched voices, and serve as cannon fodder, meatshields, and ammo drops.

Jetpack Larry[edit | edit source]

“Fun fact: Everyone who owns a jetpack is named Larry.”

~ Reel description

Reel spawned: "Jetpack Larry"; Origin:???

One of the tougher enemies, Jetpack Larry should provide a decent amount of challenge during his rounds. The key is to go up close and personal.

Aliens![edit | edit source]

“The aliens have landed! And they're pissed!”

~ Reel description

Reel spawned: "First Contact"; Origin:Duke Nukem Advanced

Stereotypical grey aliens who emit killer rays to destroy players. They provide a bit of a challenge as well (that depends if you are a tank or in Dog Mode).

B.O.B[edit | edit source]

Reel spawned: "What! About! B.O.B.!; Origin: Marathon

B.O.Bs are just like the Peasants and beggars, WITH GUNS! They shouldn't be too hard.

The Jerk[edit | edit source]

Reel spawned: "The Jerk Cometh"

The Jerk is a giant dark blue reskin of Doom's Pinkie, which moves very fast, crushes anything nearby in one hit (including other enemies), and is invincible. Fortunately, no other enemies spawn during the round, and it despawns after the round ends, unlike the other enemies which remain inbetween rounds. Compare Ms. The Jerk.

Cultists[edit | edit source]

Reel spawned: "Crudux Cruo; Origin: Blood

These guys come in Varitants like Thunderbolt users, Tommygunners, and Deadly Grenade Tossers!

WARNING!Do not combine them with Blood Money and Bomber, Man! Otherwise, they will mutate into Shiki Misakis!

Bosses[edit | edit source]

Bosses are central to the REELism experience. With the sheer variety of boss monsters and stages, it is highly encouraged to make the best out of your reel combinations.

Dog Pope[edit | edit source]

Boss-dogpope.png

The Dog Pope shoots bees at you when he barks. Due to the speed of the dogs (as well as the ability to shoot bees at you), this guy will screw you over. After all, we encourage that you bring friends for the ride. This is just the beginning.

The World's Most Boringest Ghost[edit | edit source]

Artist depiction of the WMBG.

The WMBG is a spectral entity who shoots plasma at you. No Biggles.

Ms. The Jerk[edit | edit source]

Similar to the Jerk, with the exception of being pink and the fact that you can kill it.

Player 2[edit | edit source]

Sometimes in a multiplayer game, you have to kill the second player to win the session. Hilarity ensues.

Imp Tank[edit | edit source]

The Imp Tank boss consists of an imp in a tank capable of firing very fast powerful missiles, a vulcan, and the ability to instantly crush other enemies under its treads.

Mecha-Hitler[edit | edit source]

Main article: Wolfenstein 3D

He shoots rockets along with his quadruple chaingun barrages.

The Shapeshifter[edit | edit source]

The Shapeshifter can, of course, turn into many different bosses. But who knows what the hardest boss can be? It might be this one.

MacGuffin[edit | edit source]

MacGuffin is a gigantic green hobo who breathes fire at you.

A MOTHERFUCKING WIZARD (IN A MOTHERFUCKING MONSTER TRUCK)![edit | edit source]

“No! NOOO! Not like this! Not like thiiiiiis!”

~ The Wizard, after you destroyed his monster truck

You know what? I think this pretty much explains itself. Have fun getting run over!

Custom Bosses[edit | edit source]

Some fans would make their own bosses along with the ones mentioned, which can prove to be quite a challenge.

Crawla Honcho and Donkeykracken[edit | edit source]

“This is my world! You are not welcome in MY WORLD!

~ Crawla Honcho

Stages[edit | edit source]

There are around 9 stages present in which you and your friends can duke it out against the random monsters present in the game.

Gutrot Island[edit | edit source]

Gutrot Island is a fan favorite based on how many videos are made based around it.

Abridged[edit | edit source]

“First, one guy makes a bridge. And everybody uses it, they're like, "Ooh, look, a bridge. That's new." So, like, these other two guys make another bridge. And it's kinda like the first one, but people use it anyway because the first guy is like "Oh, their bridge is pretty cool too, check it out." And then these three other guys are like, "Oh, we're going to make the best bridge ever, we're going to combine our talents and be like, "Oh, look at our bridge, it's totally amazing, ooh." and it's like, it turns out really good, and it's like the best out of all the other bridges. Everybody subscribes to it. I mean, uh, everybody crosses it. Because it's a bridge. Yeah. And before you know it everybody and their mother is making a bridge! So there's a bridge. Everywhere. Nobody even knows why they're making a bridge anymore. They just want people to cross it. They don't care where they're going. The first guy is like, "I'm going to go to conventions to promote my bridge!" It's like, it's just a bridge. It's not a big deal. Get over it.”
