Hoplitai[edit | edit source]

“Now they are so individualistic... These are my type of soldiers, much better than them Immortals!”

~ Xerxes on Hoplitai

“This should show the Greeks that we have our own identity!”

~ Vardaskans on Greeks

Hoplitai (Gk. όπλιται, sing όπλιτης), are a type of soldiers originating from Macedonia. Unlike the pike phalanx, the Hoplitai relies largely on individualistic fighting, which makes the film 300 very inaccurate since the Spartans in the movie fought in a tight formation. Contrary to popular beliefs, Greece was not the place where the Hoplite way of combat was originated or flourished, but Greece did borrow from it and together with the ideas that they borrowed from the bad, bad Romaioi and their legionaries, form the type of troops that most believe that are the Hoplitai.

Believe it or not, their cousins, the phalangitai and the sarissa, came from Greece.
