Bad Boyhood is a 2014 American coming-of-age crime drama film co-directed by Richard Linklater and Michael Bay, starring Patricia Arquette, Will Smith, Lorelei Linklater, Martin Lawrence, Ethan Hawke, and a cartel full of exaggerated Latin American stereotypes who look like they Samba-danced over the border fence and then raided a thrift store.

The film was shot intermittently over an eleven-year period from May 2002 to October 2013, showcasing the growth of two adopted police recruits (played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence) from wisecracking rookies the department doesn't trust to become wisecracking cartel-breaking specialists the department still doesn't trust.

Bad Boyhood is the second collaboration between Linkleter and Bay; it follows their cult film Before 00:00, about a young couple who wander around Vienna discussing their perspectives on life while diffusing crudely made terrorist bombs. Both films have been declared landmark, with Bad Boyhood praised in particular for its direction, acting, scope and no-scope sniper action.

His distraught mother Olivia (Patricia Arquette) and estranged father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) agree to adopt a new child or two to accompany his bereaved eight-year-old sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) and provide someone else for the pre-teen to annoy while they date Texans with scuzzy facial hair (Steven Prince)

The estranged couple agree to adopt a pair of urban youths who have entered into a youth police recruitment program after being caught spraying graffiti on the walls and laying on lawns out in front of local schools. The adoptees, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith), impress the couple with their sass, hammy acting and Lowrey's trust fund and
