Disadvantages[edit | edit source]
Well wikis just seem great! Are there any drawbacks to this wonderful new way to communicate and share information?
Sadly there are a few disadvantages:
- Since anyone can edit, often the credibility of information can be hard to prove
- Vandalism and "blanking" are a daily problem
- Controversial or contentious articles receive a lot of attention and can often ignite into flame wars, while articles of lesser interest may flounder without attention forever.
- Vanity pages and cyberbullying. Rampant particularly on Uncyclopedia. [1]
Of the last point, Cory Doctorow[2] says:
“The Britannica tells you what dead white men agreed upon, Wikipedia tells you what live Internet users are fighting over.”
