English[edit | edit source]

Noun[edit | edit source]

hawkbit (plural hawkbit)

  1. The part of the dandelion leaves that is poisonous. This varies considerably from species to species, so check carefully.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

From the folk belief that hawks can eat these parts. This belief was, however, deleted at the 1902 International Conference on Folk Beliefs, and hawks can now be seen staggering around sick after eating a dandelion. Kestrels are immune to all poison, so their health is not a reliable test. Also, kestrels are indistinguishable from hawks.
