WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the toy conglomerate PMT Corporation has announced a voluntary recall of the Tobacco Tykes playtime smoking set. The set presents a fire and smoke inhalation hazard, and children could develop long-term health problems, according to consumer advocates. The products, manufactured in China, are sold under the names Stylish Stogies, Pipe Pals, Boot Scoot Chew, and Phat Dog Phillies. The sets include a variety of tobacco, matches, pipes, and other accessories.
Following reports of 36 hospital visits caused by the toys, the commission conducted a study in cooperation with the National Tobacco Growers Council and decided in late April that the toys were a low risk. The agency had said in a statement, "there is an extremely low but potential risk of health problems". However, following a November lawsuit spearheaded by Ralph Nader, the agency agreed in a settlement last week to initiate the recall.
A spokesman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which initiated the recall, said the agency was exploring ways of getting additional messages to retailers to halt their sale.
Said Donald Lumsfield, chairman of the commission, "The decision we made is based on the powers we have under the Consumer Product Safety Act. Under the terms of the settlement, however, we cannot tell you whether there is any product hazard."
Consumers should immediately take the set away from children and return it to the store for a full refund.
