ATLANTA, Georgia -- A humorous holiday for many around the world turned violent today as American peace protesters in Atlanta, Georgia resisted arrest by city police officials.
Known as "Men Without Pants for Peace", the group of half-naked protesters stood outside the city hall demanding an end to the Iraq War and a return of the troops occupying Iraq immediately.
Due to city bi-laws against public nudity, the protesters were asked to leave or continue their protest with sufficient clothing on.
Some complied, but many continued their protest insisting, according to protest organizer John Freire, that "as long as American troops are needlessly killed overseas, we will do all that is necessary and non-violent to make others aware of our view point. If you can't look at us half-naked in our cities, how can we imagine our troops slaughtered and bleeding in foreign cities?"
Police were then authorized to arrest any protester not complying to the demands of the city, but many resisted and violence erupted. Police were unable to end the protest, and have since stepped back for the meantime.
Eyewitness reports indicated that supporters across the city have declared solidarity by breaking public nudity laws.
Mayor Shirley Franklin is expected to give a press conference later today on the conflict.
