You turn your van invisible (and yourself, for that matter). You now appear to be floating in nothing, and it's hard to tell where the boundaries of your van are. But there's absolutely zero traffic on the roads, so it doesn't matter anyway.

The grues can't see you anymore, but they can still smell you. And since they naturally hunt prey in the dark, grues don't care about your invisibility anyway. You still were unable to avoid being eaten by them. And with no weapons to fend the grues off, you were an easy meal for the grues.
