I’d like to see why this was featured; this is among the worst pages I’ve ever seen on here. The “plot” is nonsense, and the whole thing basically seems like more free advertising for Shuttleworth and his favorite little vanity project. And at the risk of sounding like someone who takes things too seriously, I’d like to point out that (1) most laptops have a function key you can press to temporarily disable the keyboard beep, and (2) with a little bit of effort, you can get a much older system running smoothly with a modern operating system – I run an eleven-year-old laptop with a 2008-release distribution (a full-feature one, not one of the “Linux for older systems” types).
Really I’m kind of disappointed overall, particularly considering I often recommend this site because of its high quality – particularly UN:HTBFANJS – but this seems to violate almost all of the guidelines. It’s probably all the worse considering the recent featuring of pond whales, one of my personal all-time favorites. It just seems that quality has gone down sharply since 2006; back then everything focused more on the SPOV, so the focus was more – well – focused (and I guess that made the good patent nonsense like pond whales stand out more, since it was all the more patently nonsensical). This one in particular just seems too caught in the middle for my taste; it can’t decide whether it’s satirizing the trivialities of Linux or child abuse...

Well mister, as the author, I feel I am best person to respond to your riveting message. You see, humor is subjective; what one person finds funny, another may not. Unfortunately you are in the minority here, as my article passed through VFH very quickly, meaning that a lot of people enjoyed reading it. Another point I will bring up regarding your sense of humor, is that many people believe that the quality of FA's has gone up dramatically since 2005/6. I'd also like to point out that the laptop I was using did not have this function key you speak of. This whole story was based on something that actually happened to me. The child abuse that you describe merely serves as an incentive for the narrator to fix the beep as quick as possible. I am sorry you did not like my article, but in reality, I just don't care, because others did. - UnIdiot |
