English has many "quirks" which should be called "stupidities". A particularly infamous one is silent letters.

  • A for aesthetic
  • C for Czar
  • G for gnarl
  • H for hour
  • K for know
  • M for mnemonic
  • N for Nguyen
  • P for pseudonym
  • T for tsunami
  • W for write

B[edit | edit source]

Any experienced Scrabble player knows that B is always silent when it is next to another B. An example is the B's in the word "Scrabble". You can argue that the first B in the word "Scrabble" is silent because the second B can make the sound. You can also argue that the second B in the word "Scrabble" is silent because the first B can make the sound.

E[edit | edit source]

The E at the ends of four-letter words of the form CVCe changes the middle vowel's sound randomly. You shouldn't love English because it would move all your common sense away. Then nonsense would flow here and there in your mind. Have you ever thought about the waves of stupid things ahead?

K[edit | edit source]

The initial K in words that begin in kn- is silent, you know. An example is knife.

P[edit | edit source]

The initial P in words that begin in ps- is silent. An example is psych.

T[edit | edit source]

Letter T is always silent when it is next to another T. An example is the T's in the word "letter". You can argue that the first T in the word "letter" is silent because the second T can make the sound. You can also argue that the second T in the word "letter" is silent because the first T can make the sound.
