River Raid - is a verticallyside scrolling video shooter game designed for the Atari 2600 video game console in 1982. The game features a boat in the shape of an airplane, floating on a strangely perfectly shaped river, attacking ridiculous amount of innocent helicopters, boats and transportation infrastructure.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Viewed from a top-down (God's) perspective, the player a steers an unstoppable disused fighter jet, which was turned into an amphibious vehicle by an unknown individual, on a river, performing assault and battery in front of and directed to many innocent civilian aircraft, transportation infrastructure owned by the local government and innocent civilian boats. Destroying transportation infrastructure serves as an attack on the transportation infrastructure of the city. The boat’s fuel can be restored by destroying many fuel-tanks on the river, which then will spill all the fuel on the river. When the player’s boat touches the leaked fuel, a mini-game starts, in which the player will pick up gallons of spilled fuel using inefficient methods.
The only enemies in the game are the remotely-controlled aircraft sent by the local government to take down the boat, which mostly never hit the player because the boat is below them.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The game was banned in many countries for terrorist propaganda. It was mistaken as a piece of literature by the Federal Department for Writings Harmful to Young Persons in Germany. The reason for it is that the game's box sent to the government includes the game's manual. Though the box does not have the actual game included, the government still had banned the manual itself. The game itself is still available in many game stores, only without the manual for it, especially in the countries where the manual for the game was banned.
