History[edit | edit source]
Ottoman colony (1589-1698)[edit | edit source]
In 1589 a ottoman ship tried to sail to India. The ship got lost and they found Comoros. They named this new place "al-makan ealaa altariq iilaa alhind" The place quckliy became a place where sailor who where sailing from Africa and Egypt could rest. In 1604 Al-Fomboni(later: Al-fomboniq) was founded. In 1654 the island had a population of about 1,000 people. In 1670 the Island was made part of the Egypt. In 1697 tensions started to raise between Oman and the Ottomans. This resulted in that the ottomans could not care enough to start a war over three random island, so they gave them up to Oman.
Omani colony (1698-1840)[edit | edit source]
Not much changed under Omani control. The only notable thing that changed was that the islands got mayotte and they changed their name to the shorter Comoros. In the 1751 the french put up a trading port called Neuve Paris on Al-Amhed IIIs island(later: Bagutte island). A bit later Al-Moroniah(later:Al-Moroniq) was founded. The Island had now a population of Ca. 3,500 people. In 1798 the french in Neuve Paris wanted to change their island to something more french, so they changed it to Bagutte island. In 1838 the french minority wanted to join france while the muslims and natives wanted to stay part of Oman. This resulted in a civil war between the french against the Omani and natives. In 1840 the french intervened and made Comoros part of the French indian ocean territories and took directed control over Mayotte.
