At Uncyclopedia, writing articles is not a requirement, but it certainly is a fun and easy way to express your creativity. To write an article, it's recommended that you start it in your userspace (for example, User:CEDA/Article about stuff) so you can edit it at your leisure. If you decide to create it in the cold world of mainspace, make sure it is in accordance with the policies laid out above, and if you're not done put the "Work-In-Progress" template - {{construction}} - onto it as well.

If the current colonization doesn't suit your fancy, then browse our rewrite and idea categories. We have lots of articles just sitting around for someone to improve, so don't be afraid - dive right in!

Hi there, I'm Uncyclopedia regular Troy McLure.[edit source]

You may remember me from such articles as Alone in the Dark and God's Answering Service. For the next 60 minutes I'll be guiding you through the rich and wonderful world of Uncyclopedia game making.

Now, as you are undoubtably aware, Uncyclopedia has a rich history of making text based adventure games. These are, to put it mildly, almost invariably bad. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. Zork Is probably the most famous of these, and was designed as a parody of the original text based adventure game called Zork. Now this game, made to look as though it was a poor DOS based adventure game, managed to become a feature as it was a well designed parody. Of course, this has led to numerous clones, including Zork 2 - Zork 83: The son of Zork.

Many long term Uncyclopedians have lamented the proliferation of these games, and on a bi-annual basis someone makes a suggestion to nuke the entire name space. This of course would be a lamentable tragedy, as this kind of issue can be avoided, but only with the help of energetic, excitable users working together to improve the standard of game hosted here.

So, we have discovered that games name space has a few issues:

  • An overabundance of text based adventure games
  • A plethora of sub-pages
  • Lack of originality and interest in these games

So, what then is the solution to these issues?

The first thing is to create a plan of what is included within a game. Too many games are started with no idea in mind of where you're going, and that leads to games that trail off and go nowhere. (Unless of course your plan is to create a game that goes nowhere - See Aitd). Planning may seem dull when you start, but it prompts you to work out what does work and what doesn't work.

Second thing is to realize that the difference between a text based adventure game and a point and click adventure game is simply pretty pictures. Would you spend money on a game that had no graphic interface. Think of Sims as an example. A general adventure would be.

  1. you walk five paces north
  2. you walk five paces east
  3. you add a fireplace to your house

Read that way it is a very dull game, but given the huge number of people that play it, the obvious truth is that it is good because of the pretty pictures.

The third thing is the main reason why I am here. One of the things that I'm in the process of doing is cleaning up the game namespace by removing as many sub pages as I can. You may have noticed that about 150 pages of Abyss were recently deleted, and about 200 pages of Aitd. I am going to get through the entire namespace and clean out the excessive pages.

You obviously have been working on Grueslayer. What I would like to do is get an idea of what items you pick up along the way (torch, mop, sword, blah blah) and what locations there are (Cave opening, dark van, etc) and how you travel fro one to the other. If we can limit the number of locations to under 100 then that will simplify the bulk of what I am going to do. Abyss had about 150 pages, which have been compressed into 1.

The next thing is to start to get images of these things. Items images are fairly easy, scenery a little more difficult. Grueslayer is about 5 or 6 generations down the track from Zork - shouldn't the look and interface reflect that as well?

I've just been doing a little work on Castle, and I'd like someone to beta test it for me before I move it over to take the place of the existing page. The WIP version is User:PuppyOnTheRadio/Movement/1/0/4/2. (Long story behind the page name, but just to shorten it it was part of an earlier attempt to streamline games.) Thanks.
